It’s safe to say that when it comes to the job hunt, the tables have certainly turned. By some, millennials are frequently perceived as lazy and unfocused, but some large companies seem to disagree. They are aware of the potential and creativity young millennials possess and according to Forbes, companies are now actually hiring consultants in order to figure out how to attract and retain this incredibly talented and versatile crowd.
According to numerous articles, including the one published by Time magazine, what millennials seek in a workplace are flexible work hours, a sense of purpose and constant guidance and feedback from the employer. Money also plays a major role in their choice of career, but it’s not one of the crucial components in their decision-making.
Millennials want to feel valued and do something with a greater purpose, which is why they’re so inclined towards switching companies and even careers when a better opportunity arises. It is for this reason and of course because they are incredibly techno-savvy, that they choose to create their own path, their own businesses and not be dependent on someone else.
Yes, many older members of the millennial generation have flocked to the technology sector, but younger millennials who may still be in college or are at least at the threshold of their twenties, have come up with an ingenious way to make money while still pursuing their academic goals.
Future dentists, English majors, doctors, psychologist have discovered that Instagram can be quite a lucrative place. Regardless of their particular talent or inclination, be it aspiring makeup artist, a savvy-dresser, a travel-lover or an avid-book reader, they have flooded Instagram with posts featuring their outfits, snippets of restaurant interiors and food recommendations, incredible makeup photos and short book recommendations.
Of course, all these people share a love of photography and they’re aware that composition, lighting and editing can make or break a photo. They invest huge chunks of their time to master the skills and attract followers and subsequent likes.
Once they gain a large following (more than 10k), Instagram allows them to attach links to their Instagram stories, making it easier for them to promote brands, products and services they like.
Knowing that the future of advertising lies not in paid ads, but influencer recommendation, brands hire these influencers, first by offering free goods and later by actually paying them to promote their product. Influencers have flexible hours that leave plenty of room for studying, steady collaborations, and sometimes actual fame.
The most successful influencers receive offers to collaborate on the creation of a product or even a clothing line, so having fun with photography can actually lead to a real career and steady income.
Set Up Shop
Millennials know how other millennials think, which gives them an edge in certain areas. It is known that this generation fosters a love of all things natural, unique and one-of-a-kind. They also know that millennials have a love of shopping, whether online or at brick-and-mortar stores. Therefore, setting up shop that sells everything from vintage and second stores, to natural and organic skincare products, to original prints and wallpapers, to handmade accessories made from the most peculiar materials is such an ingenious idea.
People actually want to shop at Swap, Vestiaire Collective, Tradesy and other popular second hand webshops. They offer value for the money. You can find quality branded vintage pieces (that no one else has) and pay a fraction of the price.
Millennials are one of the most environmentally-conscientious generations, so both used clothes and organic cosmetics are highly appealing to them, while their pursuit of individuality and self-expression draws them to unique and small artisans.
Those who feel that a picture isn’t worth a thousand words and feel it definitely requires a story to make it whole, often turn to blogging instead of just Instagramming. After all, blogs are much older than Instagram and some millennials still appreciate an extensive and impressively written article on a variety of subjects.
These are the people who don’t simply want to share what they’re wearing, eating or reading. These are the more generous types, such as those willing to share stories, hacks, tips and tricks. Fashion blogs don’t just give an insight of what the person is wearing, but provide advice on things such as how to dress for your body type, how to master different styles and so much more. Book blogs provide insightful and witty reviews and offer a real recommendation.
These are the people who have a way with words, who want to impact others in deeper, more significant ways and give real answers to their peer’s question. In turn, just as their Instagram-influencer peers, after gaining importance and visibility, they are often able to make a very fine living doing what they love – putting pen to paper, or in this case, fingers on a keyboard.
